This is becoming an annual thing. Take a read over this year’s story on Barrett Jones’ spring break trip to the third world. See more photos below …
TUSCALOOSA — These spring break trips to poverty-stricken locations aren’t new to Barrett Jones. He spent the last two in post-earthquake Haiti.
Nicaragua was a new frontier last week for Alabama’s returning Outland Trophy winner. For the first time, the fifth-year senior offensive lineman also organized and planned the annual trip for 31 people.
“The past few years, it was my idea, but I think my dad really helped me a lot the past few years,” Jones said.
“He definitely helped me again this year. But really I made all the decisions this year.
“Not that he didn’t help me some. He certainly did. He kind of felt it was my turn to sort of step up and really lead the trip schematically and make the schedule every day. It was stressful, but it was really rewarding.”
The tone of this trip also differed from the last two. Instead of providing relief to the island nation largely destroyed by the January 2010 earthquake, Jones and company traveled to the Central American nation to do missionary work.
Nicaragua is a popular destination for Americans for that purpose. It is the second-poorest country in the hemisphere behind Haiti. Apple’s estimated market value is 31 times larger than Nicaragua’s $18.7 billion gross domestic product.
It’s poor.
But there was a considerable gap between the poverty witnessed in Haiti, said Jones’ younger brother and Alabama tight end Harrison Jones.
