Hightower: Alabama didn’t get proper respect

For three weeks or  so, Alabama was the Rodney Dangerfield of college football. At least that’s what Crimson Tide linebacker Dont’a Hightower said.

He said third-ranked Alabama was treated unfairly by those outside the program in the battle for early-season respect.

“In a sense I do. One reason for that is we played Penn State this year. A lot of people were arguing we weren’t as good as everybody thought we were. But playing teams like Kent State and North Texas and beating a really good team like Penn State.

“Teams still didn’t feel like they could respect us. I feel like after the Arkansas game, I feel like we set the tone and let everybody know we are for real.”

What do you think. Did fans or the media give Alabama a bad rap? Post a comment below and be heard.

Video of Dont’a Hightower practicing with broken hand

Take a good look at Dont’a Hightower’s left hand. That looks like a cast protecting the left hand be broke last week. Pay attention at the :15 mark when he finds a way to catch the pass with one hand. More video from today’s scrimmage coming this afternoon.

Updating Hightower injury from morning practice

We just stepped out of the viewing period from the morning practice and Dont’a Hightower was in fact suited up and hitting like normal.

He had a heavy wrapping on the hand he broke earlier in the week. No black jersey either. He was popping pads like he usually does.

Center William Vlachos missed the first of two practices today. Nick Saban said his absence Thursday was a result of an illness.

Video to come soon. Stay tuned.

Dont’a Hightower rocks the houndstooth suit

Dont’a Hightower went with a crimson suit at last year’s Media Days. Today, you can see, was more of a Bear Bryant theme. Your thoughts?

Who’ll represent Bama at SEC Media Days? List is out

This is more newsworthy to those of us who’ll spend our three days in Hoover, but the list of players appearing at SEC Media Days was released online.

For Alabama, the representatives include Dont’a Hightower, Trent Richardson, and the surprise entry Mark Barron. The senior safety appears to enjoy speaking to writers a little less than most.

Unofficial betting favorites Barrett Jones and William Vlachos liked to spar over who’d be there for the Tide. In the end, neither got the call.

SEC Media Days are July 20-22 in Hoover. Alabama’s day at the circus will be the finale. Click here for the complete list on the SEC website.

And so another season of watch lists, semifinalists, etc., begins. The first two awards began the dance this morning.

To make it easy, the awards watch page will update these announcements as they arrive.

Today’s Maxwell Award watch list included Trent Richardson.

For the Bednarik Award, Mark Barron, Dont’a Hightower, Dre Kirkpatrick, Robert Lester, and Courtney Upshaw are in the running.

Hightower and Barron find out they’re related

One of the interesting nuggets to come out of today’s media availability involved two Alabama family trees that unexpectedly have common branches.

Dont’a Hightower said he recently found out that he and safety Mark Barron were cousins.

“One night after a game my mom and his mom were talking…I didn’t know I had family at all down in Mobile,” said Hightower, a native of Tennessee. “But it turns out we’re down-the-line cousins.”

Small world, huh?

VIDEO: Higtower brings it in practice

Here is a quick look at Dont’a Hightower delivering a solid pop at Monday afternoon’s practice. I’d post a full practice video, but they are all starting to look alike.

Check out Wednesday’s paper for a more complete look at the quarterbacks going nose to nose Saturday when the Crimson Tide travels to Arkansas. Also, while I have you and since a link to our high school sports blog still hasn’t found its way to the Daily website, click here to see “River City Rumblings.”

Really? Another Alabama cover of Sports Illustrated

This week's SI

For the bagillionth time in the past year, Alabama football landed on the cover of Sports Illustrated. This time, Trent Richardson earned the honor and the long-debated curse.

Just a few weeks back, Crimson Tide defenders Marcell Dareus, Dont’a Hightower and Mark Barron made the cover of the football preview edition.

Before that, Mark Ingram was on there twice and Colin Peek once more.

The cover will hit news stands later this week.

Practice resumes, Milliner still sidelined

For the first time since Saturday, the Crimson Tide practiced. Two days separated Saturday’s scrimmage from today’s return to the practice fields.

DeMarcus Milliner was the only  wearing a black non-contact jersey for the injured as Blake Sims was back with the healthy.

And now, some video.

VIDEO: Tide warms up for Saturday scrimmage

Here is yet another video in my Alabama all limited access series. It is heavy on the quarterbacks and wide receivers, though the linebackers slipped in there somewhere towards the middle. Enjoy and check back later for scrimmage updates.

VIDEO: Linebackers, DBs at practice

I did a little experimenting with the new video editor feature on YouTube to condense some of the practice tapes posted on the blog. Let me know if you like it better this way.

First, here’s the linebackers working with defensive coordinator Kirby Smart and linebackers coach Sal Sunseri.

Next, Nick Saban works with mostly defensive backs.

Finally, here’s the result of some more toying around with video editing. I tried to line it up with the music as best as possible.
