Story on Calloway’s commitment swap from Bama to Auburn

The following story did not make it into the print edition of the Sunday Decatur Daily. Since it was one of the biggest stories of the day, it had to find a home on The Daily Bama Blog.

By Bryan App
sports@decaturdaily.com

For about 1 1/2 years, Brent Calloway remained committed to Alabama.

But when the Russellville standout made what he said is his definitive decision about where he’ll play college football Saturday, a Crimson Tide hat wasn’t even among the three from which he chose.

Instead, a national television audience saw the acclaimed prospect pick up Auburn headgear from a table also including that of LSU and Southern Cal, completing the shocker of the day from the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Tide lands DE commitment

Xzavier Dickson just chose Alabama over Georgia live on the ESPN telecast of the Under Armour All-American game. He is a four-star defensive end according to both major recruiting services.

Sitting with his parents, Dickson simply put on the script-A cap when asked for his decision.

He previously said it was a coin flip between Alabama and Georgia, but he said that wasn’t how he ultimately chose the Tide.

Running back Quan Bray will also make an official commitment tonight with Alabama still on his list.

Big night for Alabama recruiting

It’s the height of  made-for-TV silliness, but tonight’s Under Armour All-American game will reveal just how good the next recruiting class will be at Alabama.

Several top prospects will announce their commitments during the live telecast on ESPN at 6 p.m. Central on ESPN.

Running back Quan Bray, defensive end Xzavier Dickson and safety Robenson Therezie all reportedly plan to make commitments live on the air tonight. All are top prospects.

Other Tide targets who’ll play include No. 1 recruit Jadeveon Clowney, Isaiah Crowell, Jay Rome, and Cyrus Kouandjio — the brother of Alabama freshman Arie Kouandjio.

Tide basketball picks up international big man

It looks like Alabama basketball coach Anthony Grant will get a little help with his absence of big bodies.

According to BamaOnLine.com, 7-foot-1 Carl Engstrom of Sweden committed to play for the Crimson Tide next season.

Take a look at this video of Engstrom to see how the big guy runs the floor. Not too bad for a 7-footer. With Grant’s fast-paced style, big men must be able to move like this.

Check out more footage of the newest member of the Tide here, here and here. It would helped if you spoke Swedish.

Grant lands two top basketball commits

Tide basketball coach Anthony Grant spoke about hitting in-state recruiting hard a year ago and the results are starting to show.

Now in Year 2 with Alabama, Grant landed two top junior prospects from the state Friday. Levi Randolph of Bob Jones and Rodney Cooper of Russell County added instant respect to Grant’s program when they committed Friday, according to multiple published reports.

Both are top names in Alabama and Randolph is among the nation’s elite, according to the recruiting services. Neither commitment is binding until scholarship papers are signed, though.

Read more about these developments in print Saturday.

Tide lands another recruit

Recruiting season, it never ends.

The Crimson Tide picked up its 12th commitment for the Class of 2011 by landing another highly-regarded receiver Wednesday, according to our friends at BamaOnLine.com.

Bradley Sylve of Port Sulphur, La., chose the Tide over a host of top-flight schools including close-by LSU/  His commitment was made public a day after Tide coach Nick Saban visited New Orleans for a stop on the Crimson Caravan.

Scout.com gave Sylve a four-star rating and ranked him the 29th best receiver in the nation.

Report: Tide lands basketball commitment

According to the recruiting gurus over at BamaOnLine.com, Anthony Grant landed a big body to help his restructuring in the Alabama basketball program.

It looks like 6-foot-8 Jason Carter has chosen the Tide over Ole Miss and will sign to make it official sometime soon. He will be the third to make it official with Grant, joining guards Trevor Releford and Charles Hankerson.

Tide reaping A-Day recruiting success

The past three days have included four commitments towards Alabama’s 2011 recruiting class. Read more about it in Tuesday’s paper, but A-Day apparently made quite an impression on the high school juniors.

Defensive end D.J. Pettway became the fourth to give Nick Saban his word during a Monday morning conversation, the Pensacola News Journal reported. He joins cornerback Jabriel Washington, who committed Sunday, and defensive back Ha’Sean Clinton-Dix and defensive end LaMichael Fanning who both made pledges Saturday according to multiple reports.

Again, read more tomorrow.

VIDEO: Walk of Fame ceremony at A-Day

Take a look at the scene surrounding the Walk of Fame ceremony at A-Day when Rolando McClain, Mike Johnson and Javier Arenas were honored as the 2009 captains.

Before the captains and Nick Saban arrived, three bus loads of special guests arrived.

A few minutes later, McClain, Johnson and Arenas are welcomed by the few hundred fans.

Then comes Saban.

And the players give quick speeches …

Finally, the hands and feet go in the cement while Saban addresses the crowd.

Alabama picks up football commitment

The recruiting season for the 2011 class of Alabama prospects is more than open. The Crimson Tide picked up another commitment from linebacker Shannon Brown of Georgia. Scout.com have him three stars and Rivals has yet to assign them.

That makes four for this class that still has 11 months to change course before signing day next February. As we all know, young minds can change.

But if you want to read more about Brown, read this posting on the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Web site.
