Video of Dee Hart practicing today

For the first time I remember seeing all season, freshman running back Dee Hart participated in the individual drills at this afternoon’s practice. He’s wearing the black No. 1 jersey in the clip below. Read more after the video.

After we had to shut off the cameras, Hart did drills that tested his injured knee (torn ACL in July) even more. The high-knee exercise (once involving old car tires) was next and he took a spill at one point. But he bounced right up and didn’t skip a beat.

Hart did several more drills involving cuts on the knee that didn’t appear to cause any issues. More later from Nick Saban’s news conference.

Video of Dee Hart rehabbing at practice

This is brief and with the zoom maxed out, but you get the idea. Freshman running back Dee Hart is making progress with the torn ACL suffered over the summer. Take a look for yourself. He’s the one in the black jersey.

Saban talks Dee Hart, Florida, scheduling

The SEC media teleconference is chugging right along this morning. Nick Saban just wrapped things up. Here’s the Reader’s Digest version of his thoughts:

  • On Dee Hart’s progress: “He’s doing extremely well in rehab.”  The freshman running back is running again, but still a month away from getting in the neighborhood of football condition after tearing his ACL this summer.
  • “It would be a real longshot if he could come back and contribute this year.
  • Florida game is both “biggest challenge” and “greatest opportunity.”
  • Adding to West Division can mess with scheduling and Saban doesn’t want rivalries altered.
  • Anyone who in the SEC who plays Texas A&M next year will have to drop a non-conference game. Those non-league games are scheduled well in advance.
  • West Division “is as strong as I remember it.” Still good teams in East, lists all but Vandy and Kentucky on that side.
  • Asked to look ahead to a possible LSU/Alabama showdown in the BCS title game, Saban said he “doesn’t care to speculate” with so much else to worry about.
  • Florida QB John Brantley “takes what the defense gives you.” The Gators are certainly capable of throwing down the field and there is no lack of respect from Alabama defense for passing game.
  • Brantley playing “with a lot more confidence.”
  • Florida offense “significantly different” from last year. No more zone-reads, much more “pro-style.”
  • Saban went nearly 12 minutes. Muschamp was 10:23 if you’re scoring at home.

Updating injuries to Dee Hart, Chris Jordan

Here is your second update of the day concerning the health of Alabama football players.

  • Freshman running back Dee Hart tore his ACL over the summer, but his rehab continued Monday with an impressive sprint. He ran the full length of a practice field a little bit ago showing definite signs of progress.
  • How well he can cut and change direction, though, is the more telling measure of stability and strength in the knee. We didn’t see any of that today.
  • Backup linebacker Chris Jordan was back in a crimson jersey working with his group this afternoon. He missed all of last week’s practice and didn’t dress for Saturday’s game.

Practice video will come in a little bit. Stay tuned for that.

Take a look at Dee Hart, once the star running back recruit, working to rehab the torn ACL he suffered over the summer. He’s working with Alabama’s head athletic trainer Jeff Allen. More to come.

School starts, players practice

The first practice of the fall semester is in progress in a predictably steamy Tuscaloosa. Here’s what’s important:

  • Injured running back Dee Hart was spotted for the first time during a media viewing period. He was riding the exercise bike in a black jersey after tearing his ACL over the summer. It’s standard operating procedure.
  • Offensive lineman Kellen Jones was also riding the exercise bike next to Hart. Not sure why.
  • Was Duron Carter there? No.
  • There were several more players on the field since the roster expands with walk-ons once classes resume.
  • Have to get back to work. My cousin from Baltimore is visiting Tuscaloosa in a little bit. Let me know your recommendations for dining. I have a leader in the clubhouse already.

Saban comments on Dee Hart injury

The following was just released by the UA media relations department.

“Dee Hart underwent knee surgery today with Dr. Lyle Cain for an injury sustained in the summer conditioning program,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said. “His status for the upcoming season will be determined at a later date.”

Saban doesn’t confirm the diagnosis of a torn ACL that Hart’s high school running backs coach listed yesterday. The coach, Riki Smith, told the Orlando Sentinel that Hart would have surgery today. Click here for today’s print story.

UPDATED: Dee Hart injures knee, reports say

Update 1:49 p.m.: The Orlando Sentinel quotes Hart’s high school running back coach as saying the Alabama freshman tore his ACL. Click here for the full story that includes details on surgery.

The web is alive with news involving a star of Alabama’s latest recruiting class. According to BamaOnLine, running back Dee Hart injured his ACL in a 7-on-7 drill in Tuscaloosa on Tuesday. The Tuscaloosa News also reported a knee injury.

We’re working on more details and will bring the latest to you as soon as possible. An Alabama spokesman could not confirm anything as of 1:30 p.m.

Should this injury end Hart’s season before it starts, the once overcrowded Crimson Tide backfield would look considerably thin. Demetrius Goode and Corey Grant transferred and Mark Ingram went pro. Trent Richardson, Eddie Lacy and Jalston Fowler return and true freshman Brent Calloway was due to start summer classes today.

Hart participated in spring practice after graduating from high school early. He played in the A-Day Game in April. In unrelated news, Hart’s high school was forced to forfeit all 14 football wins from last season after a player was deemed ineligible.

A look at Hart’s high school highlights is available here. Then see practice footage I recorded in April. Hart is wearing No. 1 jersey.
