Fun with charts: Visualizing the Ingram-Richardson comparison

Pardon my dorky fascination with spreadsheets and charts for another comparison of Mark Ingram’s 2009 Heisman season and Trent Richardson’s potential for another. (See this post for background).

So here is a week-by-week comparison of the total rushing yards each had. You can see Richardson’s slow start against Kent State was quickly negated by six straight 100-yard games.

Here’s an even fancier way of visualizing Richardson’s progress vs. Ingram’s standard.

There’s more to come. Don’t go anywhere.

How realistic is Trent Richardson’s Heisman campaign?

Associated Press photo

Well, if you look at a few polls of Heisman voters, Alabama’s Trent Richardson is right at the top of an incredibly muddled race.

ESPN’s panel of voters has him a close second to Andrew Luck. The Stanford quarterback earned 52 total points to Richardson’s 50. Click here to see the complete results.

Over at HeismanPundit.com, Richardson is third in its straw poll of voters. Luck is first, followed by dark horse Brandon Weeden, the Oklahoma State quarterback. Click here for that site.

What do you think?

Ingram signs deal, gets new jersey number

Ingram chats with Drew Brees on Saturday. (AP photo by By Haber)

Mark Ingram signed his contract with the New Orleans Saints and watched Saturday’s practice from the sidelines. The AP story reports his contract is worth $7.4 million over four years.

You’ll see from the photo above, Ingram has a new jersey number.

The No. 22 he wore at Alabama belonged to veteran cornerback Tracy Porter. So Ingram wore No. 28 to Saturday’s practice.

Ingram didn’t practice Saturday because he didn’t participate Friday while contract talks continued.

As you can see from this photo, he wore No. 7 as a senior at Southwestern Academy in Flint, Mich.

Mark Ingram the marksman?

We’re making final preparations for SEC Media Days here at blog HQ. In the meantime, Mark Ingram posted some entertaining photos on his Twitter page that I had to pass along to you fine folks.

Turns out he was visiting Fort Jackson this afternoon. That explains this.

And this.

He also took time with the children.

Alabama at the ESPYs

The Crimson Tide isn’t nominated with the numbers of last year, but a few recently departed football players are on hand at tonight’s ESPY Awards in Los Angles.

Check out this picture of Mark Ingram and Greg McElroy playing video games before the show that started at 8 p.m. According to Twitter, Julio Jones is also in the house.

Alabama did find itself listed on the nominations.

It’s not celebrating, though.

The Iron Bowl loss to Auburn is up for game of the year after the Tigers came from 24 down to win 28-27. I’m sure you already knew that part.

We’re still waiting for the ESPYs to live up to the high-water mark set in 1998 when Norm McDonald hosted and roasted athletes. It was priceless. Click here to watch that.

Mark Ingram’s video game cover out today

The NCAA Football 2012 video game was released at midnight. Yes, the one with Mark Ingram on the cover.

Looking at Twitter posts, Tide quarterback Phillip Sims and basketball player Trevor Releford were up playing the game after the midnight release.

Ingram also took to his Twitter page for a last-second advertisement.

“Everybody needs to go get NCAA football ’12!! It comes out at midnight and it’s the best college football game yet!”

Party on.

Alabama’s Hoffman named SEC female athlete of the year

Kayla Hoffman, the Tide gymnast who led the school to a national title and survived the April 27 tornado, was honored by the SEC today.

Named the SEC female athlete of the year, Hoffman is the sixth from Alabama to earn the honor. Jeana Rice, also a gymnast, was the last to win the female award in 2004 while Mark Ingram was the male winner last year.

Hoffman was named the NCAA gymnast of the year on the same day she narrowly escaped the EF-4 tornado that hit Tuscaloosa in April. Read about that here in the Sports Illustrated story.

Today in print: Trent’s the man now

Here’s a sneak peak at today’s print story about the new leader in the Alabama backfield.

TUSCALOOSA — He’s been the next big thing.

Then he was better than a Heisman Trophy winner.

Now, fewer than two years after he stepped on the Alabama campus, Trent Richardson is the old man of the Tide backfield.

“I feel like Mark Ingram, for real,” he said, smiling as always.

But can he perform like him in a leading role? Richardson’s first public showing as the top gun comes in Saturday’s A-Day Game in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Video of Mark Ingram mania in Huntsville

I was hoping to have a little insight from Mark Ingram to go with the video, but there was no time for interviews after he arrived 30 minutes late to sign items for $89-$129 a pop.

As you can see from the video, it was a mob scene.

Ingram signing autographs in Huntsville on Saturday

Grab your wallet. Mark Ingram is coming to Huntsville.

The former Alabama running back and 2009 Heisman Trophy winner will sign autographs Saturday at the Parkview Place mall, but it’s not a freebie.

Flat items like a picture will set you back $89, a mini-helmet cost $89 and $129 for a full-sized jersey or helmet.

In contrast, Rolando McClain signed autographs at the Decatur Mall last summer for $30 an item.

The signing will begin at 11 a.m. Ingram will be on the first floor of the mall close to the Dillard’s department story.
