Senior Bowl via links

Since the Bama Blog can’t be in Mobile this week, here’s a look at the other coverage coming out of the scouting week.

  • Nick Saban made quite a stir when he showed up at practice Monday. Read this.
  • All 370 pounds of Terrence Cody is making plenty of news this week. See this and this.
  • Offensive lineman Mike Johnson is impressing in the early practices, so says Sports Illustrated.
  • Roy Upchurch is just happy to be invited.
  • On a side note, the blog hopes loyal reader Kristi Whitlock has a joyous birthday.

Upchurch heading to Senior Bowl

Roy Upchurch got the call late Sunday that he’d be invited to the Senior Bowl. LSU’s Charles Scott (you might remember him as “Chuck the truck”) is hurt and Upchurch was available.

He’s the sixth Alabama player to make the roster after being the No. 3 running back in the Tide offense this season. Javier Arenas, Terrence Cody, Mike Johnson, Colin Peek and Leigh Tiffin will also be in Mobile this week.

The game is at 3 p.m. Saturday and will be televised on the NFL Network.

Wednesday practice report

There was a new player doing strength and conditioning work instead of practicing this afternoon. Freshman Dre Kirkpatrick, who had an injury in the preseason, was back on the exercise bike Wednesday wearing a black jersey.

The defensive back was also wearing a black walking boot. Hopefully we can get an update on this new situation when coach Nick Saban addresses reporters this evening after practice.

On an unrelated injury front, Julio Jones and Roy Upchurch practiced at full speed for the third straight day.

There was also an influx of NFL scouts at today’s steamy workout. I saw representatives wearing hats and t-shirts from the Philadelphia Eagles, St. Louis Rams and San Diego Chargers. I’m sure there were others too. They spent time watching the defensive lineman, most likely Terrence Cody, doing drills while a few others kept an eye on the linebackers.

Check back later for any injury updates.

Quick injury update

Julio Jones is dressed in his No. 8 uniform and is currently warming up with the receivers. Whether or not he plays is still TBD, an athletics spokesman said.

Roy Upchurch will not dress today and obviously will not play a week after suffering a high-ankle sprain against Florida International.

Another Jones/Upchurch injury update

The status of Julio Jones and Roy Upchurch is still up in the air as their injuries continue to heal.

Speaking on his weekly radio show Thursday evening, coach Nick Saban said both were questionable for Saturday against North Texas.

“I don’t think either guy is out of the realm of being able to play, and will be back fairly soon if they can’t play in this game,” Saban said.

Jones, a sophomore receiver, suffered a bruised knee against Florida International last Saturday while Upchurch went down with a high ankle sprain.

Neither has practiced at full-speed this week.

Saban also said highly-recruited running back Eddie Lacy will likely redshirt his freshman season unless another back goes down with an injury.

Wednesday practice update

I know, this is getting repetitive at this point.

Julio Jones, Roy Upchurch and Kenny Bell continued to work on strength and conditioning at Wednesday afternoon’s outdoor practice. That hasn’t changed since Monday’s workout.

Check back later for anything special coming out of Nick Saban’s final press briefing before Saturday’s game. Read Thursday’s paper for more about the connection between Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy and North Texas coach Todd Dodge.

Update on Julio Jones, Upchurch

Without going into specifics, Alabama coach Nick Saban said injured players Julio Jones and Roy Upchurch have made “significant improvements” on the SEC teleconference this morning. Neither have practiced this week while recovering from injuries suffered against Florida International on Saturday.

Their availability for this Saturday’s game with North Texas will be determined at some point after Thursday’s practice.

Jones has a bruised knee and Upchurch a high ankle sprain.

Tuesday afternoon practice report

No breaking news to report from the practice field.

Injured players Julio Jones, Kenny Bell and Roy Upchurch continued to workout on the exercise, with hand weights and the medicine ball. It was their second day of wearing black non-contact jerseys after suffering injuries in Saturday’s win over FIU.

Upchurch has a high ankle sprain and Jones bruised his knee. Bell has struggled with shin splints since the preseason.

Monday practice update

Rain in Tuscaloosa forced practice to move indoors Monday afternoon.

Injured players Julio Jones and Roy Upchurch were suited up and wearing black non-contact jerseys. The two rode exercise bikes during the brief media viewing period while the rest of the team went through the usual routine.

Running back/wide receiver Terry Grant was working out with the backs when we were watching.

Alabama/Arkansas set for CBS, Richardson honored

Now, a few more notes for your Monday afternoon.

  • CBS will cover Alabama’s SEC opener with Arkansas on Sept. 26. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
  • The Southeastern Conference named Tide running back Trent Richardson its freshman of the week after the Florida native rolled up 118 yards against Florida International on Saturday. He was the only Alabama player to be honored in the weekly awards announced Monday morning.
  • Tide defensive end/linebacker Damion Square will miss the rest of the season with an ACL tear, coach Nick Saban confirmed Monday. He will have surgery Tuesday.
  • Julio Jones is day-to-day with a bruised knee. I saw him coming into the football complex Monday afternoon and the star receiver was walking with a bit of a limp.
  • Roy Upchurch’s high-ankle sprain will take him out of action for an unknown period of time. Saban said it could be days or weeks before he’s back to full strength. Read more about ankle sprains here.

Tide running back tears ACL, other notes

TUSCALOOSA — Alabama has lost reserve running back Jeramie Griffin for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The sophomore from Batesville, Miss., suffered his injury Tuesday evening when the team practiced indoors because of weather.

Coach Nick Saban said it was a non-contact injury and that the new turf did not contribute to the situation.

After redshirting in 2007, Griffin ran six times for 29 yards last season and caught one pass for nine yards. His name had not been among those mentioned as potential starters in a crowded backfield that includes Mark Ingram, Roy Upchurch and Trent Richardson.

  • In other injury news, Saban said linebackers coach Sal Sunseri was on crutches at Thursday’s morning practice because of cartilage damage in his knee. A golf cart was offered, but the former Carolina Panther assistant decided to tough it out and coach from his crutches.
  • Defensive back and kick return specialist Javier Arenas is not working out with the offense, but Saban said he would do an excellent job if he would. But that doesn’t seem to be in the cards so the point is moot.
  • Saban also said he feels pretty good about the tight end situation. Read more about that in the paper.
