Good Monday morning update

It’s that time again to take a daily look at what is making news in the Alabama athletic universe.

  • Check out the Alabama stories in today’s paper here and here.
  • The search for Brandon Fanney is apparently over. The former Crimson Tide linebacker turned up in Florence and will play for Terry Bowden’s UNA Lions. For more about the transfer, read this story.
  • ESPN’s SEC blogger Chris Low offered his preseason conference power rankings. See where Alabama landed by clicking here.
  • Now an update on the video I posted last night (Alabama fan runs with baby to meet Nick Saban). There is a story from the Tuscaloosa News that identifies the first people on line as being from Florence. Read the story here.
  • Look! There is a new poll question posted to your left. Let us know with which Alabama football player you’d most sit a mean? Vote away.

Roster announced: Four players booted, 3 to grayshirt

TUSCALOOSA — Nick Saban spoke for the first time this summer about the roster for this fall’s squad at a Wednesday afternoon news conference. Here are the highlights:

  • Four players were kicked off the team including the player at the center of most rumors: Linebacker Brandon Fanney. The others were Prince Hall, Alonzo Lawrence and Jermaine Preyear.
  • Those four “violated a rule or policy” to earn the dismissal although Saban did not go into specifics.
  • Four freshmen were not on the roster, but Saban said four will grayshirt. The missing names were Kellen Williams, Anthony Orr, Petey Smith and Darius McKeller.
  • Freshman running back Eddie Lacy was just cleared to play by the NCAA Clearinghouse according to the Press-Register.
  • The roster released Wednesday was in no way final. There is still a 14-day window of time for non-qualifiers to get the paperwork necessary to start practice.
  • Today was reporting day although almost everyone was already in Tuscaloosa to participate in summer conditioning which ended last week.

Check back later for further updates. I will also post a few photos I took of the Bryant-Denny Stadium expansion progress.
