Tide running back tears ACL, other notes

TUSCALOOSA — Alabama has lost reserve running back Jeramie Griffin for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The sophomore from Batesville, Miss., suffered his injury Tuesday evening when the team practiced indoors because of weather.

Coach Nick Saban said it was a non-contact injury and that the new turf did not contribute to the situation.

After redshirting in 2007, Griffin ran six times for 29 yards last season and caught one pass for nine yards. His name had not been among those mentioned as potential starters in a crowded backfield that includes Mark Ingram, Roy Upchurch and Trent Richardson.

  • In other injury news, Saban said linebackers coach Sal Sunseri was on crutches at Thursday’s morning practice because of cartilage damage in his knee. A golf cart was offered, but the former Carolina Panther assistant decided to tough it out and coach from his crutches.
  • Defensive back and kick return specialist Javier Arenas is not working out with the offense, but Saban said he would do an excellent job if he would. But that doesn’t seem to be in the cards so the point is moot.
  • Saban also said he feels pretty good about the tight end situation. Read more about that in the paper.
