A few notes for your post-holiday Tuesday

There is nothing major to report on this day after Memorial Day, but there are a few nuggets of note. Here they are in no particular order:

  • Tide basketball player Demetrius Jemison was released from his scholarship after missing the entire 2009-10 season with a torn Achilles tendon. He graduated in May and would have been a fifth-year senior if he would have returned next season. Jemison becomes the second player to opt out this off-season after Justin Knox transferred to North Carolina last month.
  • Things didn’t work out in NFL camps for former Alabama linebacker Eryk Anders, so he’s taking his game to Canada. The linebacker who put the blind side hit on Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert in the BCS title game signed on to play for the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL.
  • Star Jackson is heading to Georgia State next season, according to the Mobile Press-Register. The former third-string Tide quarterback will play for the first-year FCS program that visits Bryant-Denny Stadium in November.

Star Jackson transferring, Tiffin cut from Browns

It was a busy news day, and of course I was wrapped up working on other stories and missed some of the bigger headlines of the day.

First, in a hardly surprising move, it appears Star Jackson’s Alabama career is over. Nick Saban confirmed the sophomore quarterback’s plans to transfer at today’s stop on the Crimson Caravan, the Mobile Press-Register reported.

Since the once heralded recruit is third on the quarterback depth chart behind Greg McElroy and AJ McCarron, this hardly came as a surprise.

In NFL news, former Crimson Tide kicker Leigh Tiffin got some bad news a day after getting some good news. The Muscle Shoals product was cut by the Cleveland Browns a day after signing a free agent deal.

Star Jackson returns to practice

After missing three spring football practices, reserve quarterback Star Jackson was back on the practice field Wednesday afternoon. He was absent since last week with what Nick Saban called an academic issue.

See video below of Jackson tossing the ball around this afternoon.

Nothing else major to report from this afternoon’s activities. The team left full pads behind for the first time in three practices and wore just shoulder pads and helmets. It is the last practice before the first scrimmage of the spring scheduled for Friday.

Monday football practice notes

Nothing major from today’s spring football practice on another beautiful day here in Tuscaloosa. After watching the same drills as usual, here is what I can tell you:

  • Star Jackson was not at practice for the third straight day. As Nick Saban said Saturday, it is an academic issue and did not say when he could be expected back on the practice field.
  • Spring weather is amazing.
  • Julio Jones was working with the wide receivers, not the defensive backs, punters or linebackers.
  • It was relatively uneventful.
  • Check back for video later.

VIDEO: Quarterbacks at Monday’s spring practice

Here is footage of the quarterbacks from this afternoon: Greg McElroy (12), Star Jackson (2), AJ McCarron (10) and heralded true freshman Phillip Sims (14).

Now they move on to work with the receivers led by Julio Jones (8).

Flu sidelines backup QB

Nothing major came out of the media viewing period of Monday afternoon’s practice. The only item of note was the absence Star Jackson, the second-string quarterback.

He is the second quarterback to miss practice time since AJ McCarron was out last week dealing with the flu bug that has made the rounds in the program.

Future Alabama QB plays on ESPNU tonight

Tune into ESPNU at 6 p.m. to see the latest highly-recruited Alabama quarterback play some high school football.

Phillip Sims and his Oscar Smith High School teammates from Virginia will take on Venice (Fla.) on one of the several channels that makes up the “worldwide leaders” network. I will be covering a different high school game so you’ll have to fill me in with the details later.

Sims could make things interesting next fall with Greg McElroy, AJ McCarron and Star Jackson all eligible for the 2010 season.
