Tide’s Mitchell named SEC freshman of week

In the final week of awards, Alabama landed its second representative on the player of the week list. Dominated by players from Kentucky all season, Tony Mitchell slipped his way into the freshman of the week honor by scoring 14.5 points in the Crimson Tide’s two wins.

JaMychal Green was the only other weekly award winner when he was tabbed overall player of the week back on Dec. 28.

Mitchell’s big week started when scoring 11 of his 13 after halftime in the comeback win at South Carolina. He then netted a team-high 16 in Saturday’s win over Auburn.

This just in: Green reinstated

Alabama just sent out a release with a decision on JaMychal Green. He’s back in.

He’ll be available for Saturday’s game against Auburn after serving what turned out to be a one-game suspension. It didn’t sound like a decision was going to be made tonight, but apparently nothing is set in stone.

Now it’s time to rewrite the story I had for tomorrow to reflect this change.

Will JaMychal Green play? Who knows

The mystery of JaMychal Green is still without resolution Friday afternoon. A spokesman said his status for Saturday’s Auburn game is still undetermined and doesn’t expect a decision before game day.

As you’ll remember, the second-leading scorer was suspended Tuesday for an unspecified period of time for an undisclosed period of time. Yes folks, the world of college athletics can be a real cloak and dagger society full of codes and secrets.

You can read more about this situation in Saturday’s paper. But for now, go enjoy this weather.

JaMychal Green, you’re suspended

JaMychal Green became the latest Alabama basketball player suspended when Anthony Grant gave him the extended breather Tuesday.

The former McDonald’s All-American and his 14.8 points per game will be missed Wednesday night at South Carolina when the Tide look to break the streak of seven losses in eight games. No reasons were given for the suspension other than unspecified rules violation. But that’s hardly news.

There is no word if Senario Hillman will be back Wednesday after being suspended for Saturday’s loss to Ole Miss. Grant didn’t give a timetable for his return after the game.

Anthony Brock was also suspended for the second and third games of the season. Who is next? Stay tuned for all the excitement.
