Tide reaping A-Day recruiting success

The past three days have included four commitments towards Alabama’s 2011 recruiting class. Read more about it in Tuesday’s paper, but A-Day apparently made quite an impression on the high school juniors.

Defensive end D.J. Pettway became the fourth to give Nick Saban his word during a Monday morning conversation, the Pensacola News Journal reported. He joins cornerback Jabriel Washington, who committed Sunday, and defensive back Ha’Sean Clinton-Dix and defensive end LaMichael Fanning who both made pledges Saturday according to multiple reports.

Again, read more tomorrow.

While I have you, I wanted to pass along another example of why I’m proud to be a Western Kentucky University grad. Check out this video of some baseball rain delay antics that had me cracking up in spite of the stranglehold my allergies have on me.

A few extra scenes from A-Day

Take a walk down University towards the quad.

Was it a sellout? You be the judge from this video taken as the teams take the field.

Finally, the postgame awards are handed out.

Rolando’s rings: McClain flashes championship bling

Rolando McClain shows off the three rings — one from the SEC championship, one from the BCS and another from the school. Not a bad haul.

For more pictures from A-Day, check out the album with my snap shots and the videos.

A-Day 2010

VIDEO: Walk of Fame ceremony at A-Day

Take a look at the scene surrounding the Walk of Fame ceremony at A-Day when Rolando McClain, Mike Johnson and Javier Arenas were honored as the 2009 captains.

Before the captains and Nick Saban arrived, three bus loads of special guests arrived.

A few minutes later, McClain, Johnson and Arenas are welcomed by the few hundred fans.

Then comes Saban.

And the players give quick speeches …

Finally, the hands and feet go in the cement while Saban addresses the crowd.

Here it is, followed by the White team running me over. Enjoy.

Bryant-Denny Stadium filling up

We’re a little under an hour away from the beginning of the A-Day game and Bryant-Denny Stadium is starting to fill up. It appears as if the lower bowl is just about full and the upper tiers are starting to get business.

Outside, it really is a game day atmosphere. Check back later for video of the Walk of Fame ceremony for Javier Arenas, Mike Johnson and Rolando McClain.

A-Day parking plan

Things are still a little out of sorts around Bryant-Denny Stadium thanks to the south end zone expansion. So, for all your game day parking and transportation needs, the school set up a website,

Here are a few of the highlights as they pertain to Saturday’s A-Day Game.

There will be many more public parking lots for A-Day than for a regular season game. There will be areas designated for general public parking, Tide Pride parking, handicap accessible parking, RV parking, commercial bus parking and reserved parking (Coaches, players, vendors, etc)

Starting at 10 a.m., the entire core campus area will be closed to thru traffic.  A proper Gameday permit is required to enter this restricted area.
Please take note of the following street closings, and make your driving and parking plans accordingly.  Unless noted, these streets will remain closed until after the post-game pedestrian and vehicular traffic clears.

The Tide Pride reserved parking will be in the following parking lots:

North ten Hoor Deck
South ten Hoor Deck
East ten Hoor Surface Lot
West ten Hoor Surface Lot
Bryant Drive Lot
NE Stadium Lot
Rose Administration
Elm Drive
South Rose Lot
11th Ave Media Gravel Lot

Only those with the proper Athletic Department issued parking permit will be allowed entry into these areas.

ESPN to televise A-Day again

Once again, the “worldwide leader” will have live cameras in Bryant-Denny Stadium for A-Day.

According to a release just distributed by UA, kickoff is set for 2 p.m. on April 17 for the final spring practice date that is the only open to the public. Admission is free.

Spring practices begin March 12 followed by a week off for spring break. Practice 2 of 15 is March 22.

A-Day game scheduled for …

… April 17, according to an e-mail just received from the university. The game starts at 2 p.m. and the release said further details on television arrangements will be announced at a later day. I’ve got good money riding on another ESPN audience watching in.

The spring practice schedule (tentative edition) was also released.

Drills begin March 12, followed by a 10-day gap for spring break. The 15-date practice season ends with the A-Day game more than a month after it starts. As usual, all practices are off limits to the public except for the scrimmage.

It’s hard to believe football starts up again in just over a month and a half.

A-Day game alert

Just in case you’re close to a television and you have nothing to do, a tape of this spring’s A-Day game is currently airing on ESPNU.

It has been on countless times since April, but just in case you were interested in catching it one more time, here is your opportunity.
