Saban updates Barrett Jones’ status

Injured right guard Barrett Jones won’t be seeing much action in practice Sunday afternoon, Nick Saban said.

His sprained ankle suffered a week ago against Mississippi State will keep him sidelined today but he is hopeful for the rest of the week.

Jones didn’t play against Georgia State on Thursday but Saban said he was on track to play Friday against Auburn following the weeknight win.

Not a terrible crowd to start

I know most of you have moved on from Thursday night’s Alabama win over Georgia State, but the turnout was a matter of discussion earlier in the week, so why not address it on this eerily quiet Saturday afternoon.

First, let me say that I was surprised by how many seats were filled at kickoff. Also see this and this.

The students

After that, the support dwindled.

End of the first half.

Third quarter

Fourth quarter

By the end of the game, there were plenty of good seats available. See the video below to see how many people had left. Also listen for the “Rammer Jammer” cheer after the final play. It sounded like the marching band was playing something different, but the few hundred remaining students couldn’t resist.

Game day video from Georgia State

Here it is. Your look inside the non-traditional game day atmosphere in Tuscaloosa on Thursday for the Georgia State game. Notice the ghost town on the quad and the empty student section in the second half.

VIDEO: Rob Ezell takes snaps at QB

You’ll have to read more about this in Saturday’s paper, but I’d be irresponsible if I didn’t mention the fact that Rob Ezell got the call to play a few snaps at quarterback against Georgia State.

That’s Rob Ezell of Nick Saban impression fame.

Anyway, the former Athens High School quarterback is a walk-on receiver at Alabama. That was until Saban surprised him with an opportunity to take a few snaps late in the 63-7 blowout of the Panthers. Read more about it tomorrow, but first, enjoy this lousy video I shot from the sideline of his final play.

After that, take a walk with me down the “Walk of Champions” before Thursday’s game.

Another time lapse of Alabama game day

Here it is. All afternoon/evening/night in Bryant-Denny Stadium for the Georgia State game.

Live updates from Alabama/Georgia State

The crowd is settling into Bryant-Denny Stadium that won’t likely fill all the way up tonight.

Biggest blowout ever?

The game day that we’ve all waited for has finally arrived. By this evening, we’ll know the damage. But could it be a record beat down in Alabama football history?

All things considered, that seems doubtful.

For the Crimson Tide to break a school record for margin of victory against Georgia State, it will have to better the 1922 team that nosed past Marion Military Institute 110-0.

Don’t count on the score looking anything like that since the starters will get plenty of spectating opportunities with Auburn coming up next Friday. There’s also a respect factor these days. It will be interesting to see how the fourth quarter will go. How many passes will be thrown? How much of an effort will be made to keep it sportsmanlike.

In unrelated news, check out the Ect., section of the blog if you want to read my argument to a friend who claims all Bruce Springsteen songs sound the same.

VIDEO: Spotlighting Trent Richardson practicing

It is a nasty rainy day in Tuscaloosa, so the Crimson Tide practiced indoors for the Thursday night game with Georgia State. Watch Trent Richardson (3) work with the running backs with a brace on his injured knee.

Also see the offensive line working with Anthony Steen (61) in place of Barrett Jones who sprained his ankle Saturday. Jones was riding the exercise bike and wore a black non-contact jersey. Also videoed: The long snappers honing their craft in a rarely seen drill. Exciting stuff for all.

A few things to read this Friday

There are only a few hours left in the work week. Why not waste it reading a few Alabama-related stores that I’ve tracked down on the web?

Productivity be darned (boss button sold separately).

Football tickets still available

No, not for the Penn State or Florida games, but there are still seats available for two Alabama home games this fall.

UA just announced single-game tickets remain for sale for the season-opener against San Jose State (Sept. 4) and the Georgia State debacle (Nov. 18).

The San Jose State seats cost $55 a piece with a limit of two per person while the Georgia State passes come with a discount for $45 and you can buy as many as you could possibly want. Remember the $45 game is scheduled for a Thursday night.

If interested, you can always swing by rolltide.com to snatch up those not so hard to get tickets.

On a side note, ESPN.com readers don’t like the Crimson Tide mascot or the mystery who represented my alma mater, Western Kentucky.
