Bama blog premiers with baseball talk

Welcome to the new blog for University of Alabama athletics news. I will be your guide and source for all news relating to Crimson Tide sports. We will also have fun and I encourage you to join in and leave your views and comments. Just keep it clean.

Anyway, since football season is still 100+ days away from kicking off in the Georgia Dome, let’s talk baseball. And if you’re a fan of Tide baseball, you’re feeling pretty good about the recent developments.

Brandon May was just named SEC player of the week after leading the program to its first sweep at Mississippi State since 1973. Winners in seven of the past eight, the Tide is peaking just weeks before the SEC Tournament opens May 20 in Hoover.

The explosive offense has been well-documented but an interesting number popped out when cruising over the Alabama stat sheet. The Tide is out-scoring opponents 450-227 overall as well as in each inning on average.

That is except for the ninth.

Alabama foes hold a 37-28 edge in the final inning. The only other inning that comes close is the seventh in which the Tide averages an 35-30 advantage. On the other end of the spectrum, the first inning is big for the Tide since they’ve scored 60 runs to the oppositions’ 22.

Just interesting numbers for baseball people (notoriously big numbers people).

For those who love baseball stats, let me point out the ultimate resource for pro baseball numbers baseball-reference.com. The site has every stat you ever wanted to know (and a few that you didn’t).

When looking for current pros who played for the Tide, Lance Cormier was the only name who popped up. Now in his sixth season, the pitcher is with Tampa Bay serving mostly as a middle reliever. He’s appeared in 10 games without getting a decision, but has a solid ERA of 2.25 in 20 innings.
