Grant: Mitchell weighing NBA, another school

The annual basketball banquet just wrapped up in Coleman Coliseum. They were cleaning the dishes when we got a few minutes with Anthony Grant.

He discussed a few matters moving forward and a few looking back. The departure of Tony Mitchell came up.

“I think he’s got options where, potentially, he could put himself in the draft and look at those opportunities,” Grant said. “He’s indicated that it’s going to be an option for him, but at the same time keep the option open of possibly returning to school and playing again.

“I think right now it’s up in the air what final decision he’ll make.”

Mitchell, who’ll be a senior next year, would have to sit out a year if he decides to transfer to another Division I school.

Update: Charles Hankerson is also looking for a new basketball home. He too decided to leave Alabama after his second season with the Tide.

Hankerson said he’s looking for something closer to his south Florida home. Miami is on his wish list, he said.

Update II: So, who won awards tonight? Here’s the list. It doesn’t include an MVP because one wasn’t awarded.

  • Student Athlete Award: Retin Obasohan (4.0 GPA).
  • Outstanding freshman: Levi Randolph
  • Hustle award: Andrew Steele

More to come later.
