Alabama adds one for huge stretch run

JaMychal Green watch is reaching its peak. It’ll climax this evening in Coleman Coliseum leading up to the 5 p.m. visit from Mississippi State. Read about the matter in today’s story …

TUSCALOOSA — He’s back, but to what extent is the next mystery for the Alabama basketball program.

Senior JaMychal Green will dress for today’s 5 p.m. visit from Mississippi State after a suspension kept him from the previous four Crimson Tide games. Coach Anthony Grant didn’t say how much of the work load will fall on the 6-8 forward in a crucial SEC game.

“He’ll be available,” Grant said. “We’ll make some determinations based on how practice goes (Friday). But he’ll most likely be dressed and available.”

The news wasn’t as positive for Alabama freshman Trevor Lacey. Grant said Lacey suffered a sprained ankle in Thursday’s 79-68 win at Arkansas.

“He just has to manage the swelling and the pain,” Grant said. “Right now he’s listed as doubtful.”

Green, the team’s only senior, was suspended indefinitely the morning of Alabama’s 67-58 loss at LSU on Feb. 11. Junior Tony Mitchell was already under suspension while starters Trevor Releford and Andrew Steele joined Green in the pre-LSU disciplinary action. Steele and Releford returned the next game, but Green and Mitchell remained on the shelf.

The program announced Monday that Mitchell’s suspension would include the rest of the season and Green was clear to resume practicing.

Alabama (18-9, 7-6 SEC) was 2-2 in the four games Green missed and had its second-best scoring night Thursday in Fayetteville.

Steele, a junior who had a career-high 15 points against the Razorbacks, doesn’t anticipate Green’s return will interrupt the Tide’s flow.

“I think it will make us better,” Steele said. “I don’t think he’s going to take away from anything. I think, with how everyone is playing, you add him … (Green’s) probably been our most consistent offensive weapon.”

The Montgomery product still leads the team with 14.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Green scored 14 points in a 56-52 loss in Starkville on Jan. 14.
