Tony Mitchell suspended ‘indefinitely’

Tony Mitchell, Alabama’s second-leading scorer, was suspended indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team.

Coach Anthony Grant said the decision was made after Saturday’s win over Ole Miss. It was an accumulation of issues, Grant said.

The junior is averaging 13.1 points a game and appeared to snap out of a slump Saturday against Ole Miss. His 14 points was the most he scored since the SEC opener at Georgia.

The Ole Miss game was also the first this season Mitchell didn’t start.

JaMychal Green, the team’s only senior, spoke with Mitchell after the suspension.

“I told him to keep his head, you know, don’t do anything dumb and stupid,” Green said. “Just come back with a good attitude and just get you mind together and come back ready to play.”

Junior Andrew Steele said he understood Grant’s decision “was in the best interest of the team.

“It’s between him and coach,” Steele said. “We don’t really know the specifics what went down between him and coach.”

This is the first suspension of the season for Alabama.
