TUSCALOOSA — The Alabama football program lost one Sunseri, but kept the other.
Tennessee officially hired Crimson Tide outside linebackers coach Sal Sunseri for its defensive coordinator opening Friday morning. His son, Vinnie Sunseri, isn’t going anywhere.
The freshman defensive back announced early Friday afternoon he would remain at Alabama. He’s expected to compete for a starting job next season.
“The University of Alabama is the place for me and that is what my heart and my mind tell me,” Vinnie Sunseri said in a statement released by the school. “This is my home and there is no place else I’d rather be. I’ll root for him every day of the year, except for the third Saturday in October.”
Sal Sunseri becomes just the latest heading to Knoxville after spending time with the Alabama program. He’ll join defensive lineman Darrington Sentimore, who signed with the Vols in December after one season at a community college and two with the Tide.
Tennessee athletics director Dave Hart was the second in command behind Mal Moore at Alabama for four years. He hired Alabama officials Jon Gilbert and Mike Ward for administrative positions.
