It hasn’t been a half hour since Tennessee officially named Sal Sunseri its defensive coordinator. But it’s not too soon to consider how it will impact the future of Sunseri’s son, Alabama freshman safety Vinnie Sunseri.
In one season, the converted linebacker played his way into prime special teams roles, then into the first-team defense in dime situations.
With Mark Barron and Will Lowery graduating, Vinnie Sunseri should move even higher on the depth chart next season.
But would the departure of his father make him want to leave Tuscaloosa to keep that family bond in tact? That’s what I asked him in a hypothetical situation last week at BCS media day. Here’s what Vinnie Sunseri said:
“Actually, I haven’t really thought about that ever,” he said. “But I’d definitely stay here. But it’d definitely be a tough adjustment not having him around because that’s one of the main reasons I came here. Growing up, he was always having to coach other players and was out recruiting, and I felt like this would be a great opportunity to be with him and actually get to hang out with him.”
Remember, that answer is a week old and the situation wasn’t yet a reality. Stay tuned for more when it becomes available.
