The other lock-down defense on campus

Take a few minutes and read more about the Monday night Alabama basketball win over Oakland with today’s print story:

TUSCALOOSA — The potential for upset was real Monday night in Coleman Coliseum.

Coming off two straight NCAA tournament appearances, Oakland had the nation’s second-best scoring offense in the nation a year ago.

Then it met Alabama’s defense.

The No. 19-ranked Crimson Tide suffocated the Grizzlies in a 74-57 pounding after leading by as many as 23. Alabama coach Anthony Grant, however, wasn’t hanging any banners after the 22nd straight home win.

“The mistake sometimes you make is to blow things out of proportion,” he said. “This is one game. Our guys played well tonight, but we have to understand we have good signs with our team. But I don’t think this team has scratched the surface with how good we can be.”

The positive indications began on the defensive end. Scoring 85.5 points a game last season, Oakland was held to fewer than 57 points just once in the 25-win campaign.
