Now that’s honesty: Ga. Southern coach blunt about ‘Bama matchup

The Eagles of Georgia Southern have quite a football team. Ranked third in the Football Championship Subdivision, coach Jeff Monken’s team won a Southern Conference title last week.

Now its flexbone offensive — an offspring of the wishbone — comes to Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday. The No. 1 rushing offense in the FCS versus the best rushing defense of all divisions.

How do the Eagles control the clock and possession Saturday? Monken was frank in his response.

“Ha! Ask everybody they’ve played,” he said. “They give up 51.9 yards a game on the ground. I never heard of anything like that. They give up 7.1 points a game to their opponents. I never heard of anything like that.

“They are a great, great defense – great defense. Big, physical, fast and extremely well coached. I don’t know. I don’t know. I have no idea how you do it. I don’t. We are who we are. We have to do the best we can to get our kids to play to the best of their ability. That’s all we can do.”

His grip on the reality of the situation continued later in Monday’s phone interview.

“A team like Alabama can embarrass us in a hurry,” he said. “We’re very cognizant of that fact and recognize what a great team they have and what they’re capable of.”

  1. He speaks truth but he is also motivating his players to play above themselves in this great opportunity. However, they will wear down against Bama’s strength and size.

  2. Agree with Richard. It’s probably been 20 years but I believe this was the team that opened the season with Auburn in Auburn and jumped out to a 17-0 lead. Auburn eventually won, but it was a close game well into the 2nd half. He’s trying to fire up his players and lull Bama to sleep. Roll Tide!
