Add Curt Cignetti to the list of departed Alabama football assistants of this offseason.

The wide receivers coach officially accepted the head coaching job at Division II Indiana University of Pennsylvania this morning.

Cignetti previously interviewed for the head job at Kent State in December. He joins Bo Davis (defensive line to Texas) and Joe Pendry (offensive line, retired) as Alabama assistants who coached their final game for the Tide on New Year’s Day in the Capital One Bowl.

Alabama coach Nick Saban just released the following statement on Cignetti’s departure/new job.

“Curt did an outstanding job for us and in his four years at the University of Alabama and I know he will do the same at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He has a great knowledge of the game and I know he learned much of that from his dad, Frank, who won a lot of games at IUP and is a legendary coach there. This is a great opportunity for Curt to put his own stamp on the program as a head coach. We wish the Cignetti family the best in this new role and appreciate all they did to help us be successful here at Alabama.”

  1. You know I have to wonder if his departure wasn’t mutually appealing to all parties involved. I noticed he was also the recruiting coordinator and the recruiter of record on Brent Calloway. Maybe it was strongly suggested he pursue other avenues. As the recruiter and recruiting coordinator he should have been on top of that situation before it occurred. What are your feelings on this? By the way I really enjoy your tweets.

First off, thanks for reading. Secondly, I’m not sure Saban wanted to chase him off over one recruit. Cignetti interviewed for the coaching job at Kent State well before Calloway changed his mind. I think this is just part of the progression in the migrant life of a football coach. Thanks again for reading.
